Gir — Where the Roar of the Asiatic Lion Lives On
Gir — the very name brings to mind the roar of lions! This is India's only home to the famous Asiatic Lion, and outside of Africa, the only place on Earth where wild lions still roam. Located in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, Gir is a landscape unlike the typical Indian tiger reserve — dry deciduous forests, open grasslands and scrub habitat, extending remarkably close to human settlements and the Kesar mango farmlands the region is famous for. It is this unusual coexistence of lions and people that makes Gir so special.
The story of Gir is, in many ways, one of India's greatest conservation successes. From a population that had dwindled alarmingly at the turn of the last century, the Asiatic Lion has clawed its way back, and today lions are found not just inside the sanctuary but across much of the surrounding landscape. Seeing them in the wild here is a privilege that no other place in the world can offer.
And what sightings we had! We were treated to multiple encounters with lions, including the male lions Jay and Veeru — the famous brothers, named after the iconic duo from Sholay, who lived together for many years. Watching these two magnificent males was like meeting celebrities of the forest.
Our last safari, in a zone bordering the mango farms, turned out to be the highlight of the trip — around 13–14 lions roaming through the area in a single drive! We also got to see and photograph a complete lion pride — a male, a female and a cub. Watching the cub's playful time with its mother, while the father observed quietly from a distance, was a moment straight out of a wildlife documentary — and one to cherish for a lifetime.
A word on planning: safaris in Gir are well organised, with fixed permits for each zone, though things can get chaotic when crowds swell during the holiday season. Booking permits well in advance — and keeping a buffer day or two for that one special sighting — is always the better way to experience this one-of-a-kind destination.
Gir doesn't just show you lions; it shows you a world where the king of the jungle and people have learnt to live side by side. That, perhaps, is its greatest sighting of all.
Travel notes
Best time is during late summer and early winters. Summers can be very very hot and winters can be cold. No plastics allowed and Gir Safari provides a metal water bottle!
